How do I choose a funeral director?

Compare at least two or three. Ask each for their standardised price list (every UK funeral director must publish one), check what is included, ask who owns the business and whether they belong to a trade body such as the NAFD or SAIF, and choose someone you feel comfortable with. Full guide.

What is the difference between an undertaker and a funeral director?

Nothing — “undertaker” is the older term. Today most call themselves funeral directors.

Can I change funeral director?

Yes. You can move to a different funeral director at any point before the funeral, although you may have to pay for services already provided.

Are funeral directors regulated in the UK?

Funeral directors in Scotland must follow a statutory code of practice (since March 2025) and can be inspected. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland there is no specific regulator yet, but all funeral directors must follow the Competition and Markets Authority’s price transparency rules, and many belong to the NAFD or SAIF.
